On a high-speed hearing measurement considering the age of both ears

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America
In order to enrich the human senses, care must be taken not to damage your hearing. Hearing damage suffered in a living environment is difficult to find out because there are few initial symptoms. Existing pure tone hearing test detects whether pure tones are heard well for each frequency for 250–8000 Hz sound, which is mainly used in everyday conversation, but it is inaccurate and takes a long time. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed a high-speed measurement method that can easily and quickly self-measure both ears' hearing damage through an APP of a smart-phone. In this method, nine pure tones that are age-compensated for each voice sub-band are alternately heard in both ears, thereby self-identifying their own hearing damage at high speed. When 18 tone pulses were heard for 27 s per person, 1 out of 12 subjects was identified as suspected of partial hearing damage. When the test subjects were informed of the hearing determination method for the number of hearings, the participants themselves immediately determined whether their hearing was damaged. Eventually, both ears' hearing damage was easily and accurately measured by the method proposed, which took more than 10 min with the existing manual method. As a result, it is possible to maintain a healthy life by simply determining whether or not there is a hearing loss.

PDS 73: Neurological effects, Johan Friso Foyer, Floor 1, August 26, 2019, 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM Background: Concern has been raised regarding the possible effects of mobile phone use on children’s health. The World Health Organization has emphasized the need for research into the possible effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) in children. We examined the association between prenatal and postnatal exposure to mobile phones and behavioral problems in children. Method: Study subjects were 763 mother-child pairs from a prospective birth cohort, Mothers and Children’s Health (MOCEH) study. Mother’s mobile phone call frequency and duration were assessed at early pregnancy (≤20 weeks), 36 and 60 months of children’s age via questionnaire. Children’s neurodevelopment was assessed using the Korea-Child Behavior Checklist (K-CBCL) of Infant Development-Revised at 4, 5 and 6 years of age. The K-CBCL is consisted of total behavior problems, internalizing and externalizing problem. Logistic regression analysis was applied to groups classified by trajectory analysis showing neurodevelopmental patterns over time. Models were adjusted for residential area, child’s gender, maternal age at child birth, household income, alcohol intake and urinary cotinine level at 5 years of age. Results: There was a significantly increased risk of having a high externalizing problem score from 4 to 6 years of age, in relation to an increasing maximum of mother’s mobile phone call duration at 36 and 60 months of age after adjusted several confounding factors (p-trend = 0.02). There was no association between mother’s mobile phone use during pregnancy and children’s behavior problem. Conclusions: We found association between postnatal exposure to mobile phone use and child’s behavior problems. Acknowledgement: This work was supported by the ICT R&D program of MSIT/IITP. TPS 664: Climate change: temperature effects 2, Exhibition Hall, Ground floor, August 27, 2019, 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM Aim: The purpose of this study is to investigate the health impact of air conditioning use during the 2018 heatwave in South Korea, which is the warmest in Korean weather observation history. Methods: Participants in this study were 1,000 adults aged >18 who were recruited from across Korea. Participants were asked about the symptoms of various diseases, air-conditioningitis, food poisoning, and whether they had any absences, lateness, or canceling appointments during the heatwave. About their air conditioning use, we questioned whether air conditioning was used in main living space excluding home, had air conditioning at home, and could not use air conditioning because of the electric charges when air conditioning is necessary. Association between air conditioning use and health impacts during the heatwave was analyzed by multiple logistic regression model. Potential confounding factors included age, sex, residential area, occupation, type of house, number of family members, prevalence of chronic diseases, and monthly household income. Results: When air conditioner was not operated in main living space excluding home, odds ratio (OR) of experiencing symptoms related to cardiovascular diseases and neurological diseases was 8.53, and 2.02, respectively. In the absence of air conditioner at home, OR of experiencing symptoms related to neurological diseases and canceling appointments was 1.64, and 3.43, respectively. When electric charges limit air conditioning use where it is necessary, OR of experiencing symptoms of all diseases, skin diseases, digestive diseases, kidney and urinary diseases, nervous system diseases, mental diseases, sleep disorders, food poisoning, lateness, and canceling appointments was 1.76, 1.92, 1.65, 4.74, 1.52, 1.57, and 1.63, respectively. Conclusion: When air conditioner cannot be operated in home or main living space, it has a negative health impact during heatwave. And if electric charges limit air conditioning use when it is necessary, the situation also has a negative impact on health.
