Association between Preoperative Psychiatric Morbidities and Mortality after Oncologic Surgery: A Nationwide Cohort Study from 2002 to 2019 in South Korea

We aimed to examine whether preoperative psychiatric morbidities affect 30-day postoperative mortality. Using a nationwide registration database in South Korea, the study included all patients who underwent curative cancer surgery from 1 January 2002 to 31 December 2019. Patients underwent surgery for breast, laryngeal, lung, thyroid, gastric, colorectal, esophageal, liver, pancreatic, kidney, bladder, testicular, prostate, vulvar, uterine, or brain cancer. Depression, anxiety disorder, substance abuse, and post-traumatic stress disorder were considered preoperative psychiatric morbidities. Among the 944,794 patients in the final analysis, 5490 (0.6%) died within 30 days of the surgery, and 24,370 (2.6%) had preoperative psychiatric morbidities. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that preoperative psychiatric morbidities were associated with a higher (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.23; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.09, 1.39; <i>p</i> = 0.001) 30-day mortality rate than the rate noted for patients without preoperative psychiatric morbidities. This association was significant in the breast (aOR: 3.31, 95% CI: 1.36, 8.07; <i>p</i> = 0.009), lung (aOR: 1.54, 95% CI: 1.19, 2.01; <i>p</i> = 0.001), and kidney (aOR: 1.87, 95% CI: 1.06, 3.31; <i>p</i> = 0.03) cancer groups in the subgroup analyses. In South Korea, preoperative psychiatric morbidities are considered to be associated with increased 30-day postoperative mortality.

The Effect of Culture Tourism SNS Influencer Characteristics and Consumer Needs Satisfaction on Content Immersion and Product Purchase Intention

본 연구는 문화관광 SNS의 인플루언서들의 특성이 소비자 욕구 충족성, 콘텐츠 몰입과 제품구매 의도에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 실증분석하고, 콘텐츠 몰입의 매개효과에 대해 검증하여 문화 관광 SNS인플루언서를 활용한 마케팅 활동에 의미있는 시사점을 제시하고자 하였다. 온라인 플랫폼에서의 SNS 인플루언서와 구매의도에 대한 효율적 관리를 위한 실무적인 시사점을 제시하기 위해 본 실증분석을 실시하였다. 연구의 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 문화관광 SNS인플루언서의 특성 중 매력성과 전문성은 콘텐츠 몰입에 유의미한 정(+)의 영향을 간는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 소비자 욕구충족성은 콘텐츠몰입과 제품 구매의도에 유의미한 정(+)의 영향을 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 문화관광 SNS인플루언서의 특성 중 신뢰성과 전문성은 제품 구매의도에 유의한 긍정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 콘텐츠 몰입은 인플루언서의 특성이 소비자 욕구 충족성과 제품구매의도에 미치는 영향에 있어 매개효과를 갖는 것으로 나타났다.

Euphorbia supina Extracts Block NADPH Oxidase-Mediated, Ceramide-Induced Apoptosis Initiated by Diesel Particulate Matter

Air pollutants contribute to the development of diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary cancer, cardiovascular problems, and some skin diseases. We recently found that a major air pollutant, diesel particulate matter (DPM), induces apoptosis in human keratinocytes by increasing a proapoptotic lipid mediator, ceramide. DPM activates nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase (NOX), which stimulates sphingomyelinase, leading to an increased conversion of sphingomyelin to ceramide. Interestingly, we characterized that although NOX is a reactive oxygen species (ROS) generator, the activation of sphingomyelinases by NOX is an ROS-independent mechanism. A Korean weed, prostrate spurge <i>Euphorbia supina</i> Rafin (ESR), has been used for centuries as a folk medicine to treat bronchitis, hepatitis, hemorrhage, and skin inflammation. Flavonoids, terpenes and tannins are enriched in ESR, and although ESR has proven antioxidative activity, its biological activities are largely unknown. Here, we investigate whether and how ESR protects keratinocytes against DPM-mediated apoptosis. We found that ESR-extracts (ESR-Ex) protect keratinocytes from DPM-induced apoptosis by inhibiting NOX activation in keratinocytes in response to DPM. We also demonstrated that ESR-Ex suppresses NOX activation via a blockage of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activation-mediated transcription of neutrophil cytosolic factor 1 (NCF1)/p47phox, a subunit of NOX. Our study reveals previously uncharacterized biological activity of ESR-Ex; i.e., its inhibition of Ahr and NOX activation. Thus, because the inhibition of NOX has already been developed to treat NOX-mediated diseases, including various types of cardiovascular diseases and cancers, initiated by air pollutants and because AhR activation contributes to the development of chronic inflammatory diseases, our study provides further advantages for the medical use of ESR.
