도심 항공 모빌리티(UAM)의 안전 운용을 위한 비상 착륙 시스템의 구축이 필수적이다. 본 연구에서는 지리정보시스템(GIS) 기반 공간 분석과 실시간 비전 데이터 기반 영상 분석을 통한 비상 착륙지 선정 방법을 제안한다. 사전 후보지 선별(오프라인) 프로세스에서 3단계 필터링 과정을 거쳐 잠재적 비상 착륙 후보지의 데이터베이스를 경량화하고, 실시간 온보드 프로세스에서 후보지 클러스터링, 컴퓨터 비전 기반 장애물 여부 확인, GIS와 비전 결과를 모두 활용하는 최종 비상 착륙지 선정 시스템을 구축한다. 대구광역시를 사례 연구 지역으로 정하고 제안한 방법론을 적용하면, 농경지, 개활지, 주차장 등이 비상 착륙지로 선정된 결과를 확인한다. 본 연구는 UAM 비상 착륙지 선정을 위한 실질적 데이터 분석 결과를 제공하여 UAM 상용화 초기 단계의 기초 자료 및 방법론으로 활용가능함이 기대된다.

Visual-inertial odometry (VIO) is a technique to estimate the motion of a vehicle platform by fusing camera and inertial sensor data. It operates effectively in GPS-denied environments such as indoors and is widely utilized in applications like autonomous navigation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) due to its real-time performance and high localization accuracy. However, since VIO relies on textures in the environment or features extracted from image frames, localization may easily fail if the number of feature points in the image is insufficient or the U AV faces a low-texture environment. To address these issues, we propose an active VIO algorithm by planning heading angles autonomously. This algorithm improves VIO accuracy and maintains robust localization even in an unknown environment by employing heading planning to acquire more feature points in the subsequent image frames. To achieve this, we first divide an image frame into several sections and count the number of feature points in each section. Next, we determine the desired heading angle based on the feature-occupied ratio of each section. The proposed approach is validated in various cases in a simulation environment that mimics an indoor warehouse.

A commercial tracking camera readily available in aerospace applications usually provides reliable navigation solutions. While the navigation resulting from a tracking camera sometimes fails or drifts in a certain environment, another tracking camera facing a different direction in the same environment is usable. To produce consistent navigation with multiple tracking cameras facing distinct directions, we propose a real-time fusion approach employing an interacting multiple-model filtering framework. In other words, estimation outputs from each tracking camera are weighted according to their accuracy and uncertainty to generate a robust navigation system. The real-world experiments show that the proposed navigation system overcomes sensor failure and loss of texture for one camera.

Contrary to existing airports in the suburbs, a vertiport is located in a complex urban area and has space limitations. Precision landing technology at a vertiport is essential for safe urban air mobility (UAM) operations in limited spaces. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently released a symbol design for vertiport identification. However, research on the precision landing of a UAM vehicle using this symbol is still insufficient. We propose a vision-based system for detecting the FAA vertiport marking to ensure precision landing on a vertiport. After the existing fiducial marker detectors have been benchmarked, we establish a methodology that recognizes the vertiport marking, estimates the relative position and attitude through transformation, and visualizes the pose estimation results to instruments similar to the instrument landing system. Marking detection and pose estimation are validated experimentally by using cameras and drone flight tests. The results show the applicability of the proposed approach under the operating conditions for UAM.
