경제적 불평등과 범죄 간의 관계는 오랫동안 거시적 이론과 경험적 연구의 주요 주제로 다루어져 왔다. 본 연구는 경제적 불평등이 범죄에 미치는 영향이 경제적 이동성, 구체적으로 계층의 상승 이동성 수준에 의해 조절되는지를 검증하고자 하였고, 이를 위해 미국 50개 주를 분석단위로 하여 경제적 불평등과 이동성 간 상호작용이 유의미하게 도구적 범죄율과 폭력범죄율을 예측하는지 분석하였다. 분석 결과 경제적 불평등과 도구적 범죄율과의 정적인 관계는 계층 상승 이동성이 높아질수록 약화되는 경향이 있음을 확인하였다. 반면 폭력범죄율에서는 이러한 조절효과가 확인되지 않았다. 이는 비록 불평등한 경제적 조건에 있다 할지라도 계층 상승 이동성이 존재한다면 불평등이 범죄로 이어질 가능성이 줄어들 수 있음을 보여주지만, 범죄의 유형에 따라 그 효과가 다르게 나타날 수 있음을 시사한다.

Although numerous studies have explored problematic behavior among adolescents in Western contexts, there is a notable lack of research in South Korea , a newly emerging migration-accepting country. This study aimed to address this gap by utilizing the general strain theory to investigate the impact of transnational social ties on problematic behaviors, specifically deviant behaviors and social withdrawal, among multicultural adolescents in Korea. Additionally, we investigated whether self-esteem moderated this relationship. We analyzed data from waves 7 to 9 of the Multicultural Adolescent Panel Survey (MAPS). We used the number of deviant behaviors and social withdrawal as dependent variables . Our primary independent variable was transnational ties, and self-esteem and sociodemographic characteristics were used as control variables. We applied a hybrid random-effects negative binomial regression for the number of deviant behaviors and a hybrid random-effects regression for social withdrawal. Transnational social ties affect problematic behaviors differently in multicultural male and female adolescents to externalize their problematic behavior through deviant behavior, whereas female adolescents tend to internalize their behavior through social withdrawal. For male adolescents, having inbound transnational ties (such as grandparents’ visits to Korea), especially over time, increases the likelihood of deviance, and higher self-esteem increases this risk. Conversely, female adolescents are more likely to experience social withdrawal over time due to outbound ties (visits to their mothers’ home countries) and both types of transnational ties. Higher self-esteem contributes to increased withdrawal among female adolescents. Collaboration between the home countries of female marriage migrants and the Korean government could facilitate the establishment of positive transnational ties, transforming them into sources of support rather than stress for adolescents. Our findings of gender-specific coping behaviors in relation to transnational ties highlights the necessity of developing and disseminating gender-specific intervention programs, including self-esteem enhancing programs, that equip adolescents with effective stress-coping strategies.

Public perceptions of crime and tendencies in punitive judgment can influence the criminal justice process. Negative attitudes, particularly fear and prejudice towards social minorities, may result in harsher punitive judgments and actual biased punishments. This study conducted a randomized scenario experiment with 300 adult men and women in South Korea to examine the independent and interaction effects of defendant and victim ethnicity and participants’ gender on punitive judgments(guilt, probability of guilt, and sentencing) in a mock rape case. The results revealed significant differences in guilt and probability of guilt judgments, although not in sentencing judgments. Participants perceived a Korean-Chinese male defendants as more likely to be guilty than a Korean male defendant. Similarly, defendants were judged more likely to be guilty when the victim was a Korean-Chinese woman compared to a Korean woman. Gender differences among participants were also found: female participants tended to find the defendant guilty regardless of ethnicity, especially when the victim was Korean, whereas male participants showed a higher likelihood of finding the defendant guilty when the victim was Korean-Chinese. The study concludes with a discussion of its theoretical implications and methodological limitations.

본 연구는 온라인을 통한 불법적인 개인정보 유포행위에 대해 범죄학의 통합이론인 상황행위이론(situational action theory)의 적용이 가능한지를 검증하였다. 이를 위해 380명의 성인 남녀를 대상으로 온라인 설문조사를 실시하여 범죄자 및 범죄 혐의가 있는 자, 혹은 도덕적 비난의 소지가 있는 자의 개인정보 유포 의향 여부를 묻고, 범죄유발적 온라인 환경 및 개인의 범죄 경향성(도덕성, 자기통제력)을 측정하여 이들 개인적, 환경적 조건들이 개인정보 유포 의향을 유의미하게 예측하는지 살펴보았다. 분석 결과 개인정보 유포행위에 우호적인 범죄유발적 온라인 환경은 유의미하게 개인정보유포 의향을 높이는 것으로 나타났고, 개인의 범죄 경향성을 나타내는 낮은 도덕성과 낮은 자기통제력은 각각 개인정보 유포 의향을 높이는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 도덕성과 자기통제력은 각각 범죄유발적 온라인 환경의 영향력을 유의미하게 조절하는 것으로 확인되었다. 즉, 높은 도덕성은 범죄유발적 온라인 환경의 영향을 완충하는 반면, 낮은 자기통제력은 이를 증가시켰다. 그러나 상황행위이론에서 예측했던, 낮은 자기통제력의 영향력이 도덕성의 수준에 따라 조건적으로 작용할 것이라는 두 변수 간 상호작용 효과는 유의미하게 나타나지 않았다. 이러한 분석 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구의 의의와 한계를 논의하였다.
