Case Studies in Thermal Engineering
In this paper, a new open-ended microwave oven with E-field uniformity has been proposed for microelectronics packaging curing. The open-ended oven contains three dielectrics and an air-filled section, being physically open at one end but electrically shielded due to the evanescent mode in the air-filled section. The first, second, and third dielectrics are square, square, and ring-shaped, respectively. The relative permittivities of them are 2.1, 6.6, and 20.6, respectively. The first dielectric is used for a TM 11 mode cavity. The second and third dielectrics serve as impedance transformers for the entire face and the edge face, respectively. The second and third dielectrics, shifting the field along a longitudinal direction, increase the E-field intensities in the center region and perimeter region, respectively, on the external surface of the dielectric-air interface. The combination of both second and third dielectrics can result in the E-field uniformity and maximization at the dielectric-open end. In simulated analysis, uniformities of 2.8%, 2.8%, and 2.7% for the TM 11(1st) , TM 11(2nd) , and TM 11(3rd) modes were obtained, which are 7.6, 7.9, and 9.3 times better, respectively, than those of the conventional open-ended oven. The E-field uniformity was verified through experimental tests in two cases.

IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement
This paper proposes a new design method for a balanced amplifier using a reactance elimination technique and a complex conjugation property to provide the output voltage balance and the voltage standing wave minimization of individual power amplifier (PA) components in plasma systems. The reactance elimination scheme is applied to both outputs of individual PAs for their output impedance conditions, being real and lower than the characteristic impedance of the RF system. For the complex conjugation property between both through and coupling coefficients, transformer-based quadrature couplers are adopted. The presented balanced amplifier consists of two sets of PAs, transformer-based quadrature couplers, and reactance cancelation components. The designed balanced amplifier was verified by applying it to a vacuum ultraviolet plasma lamp system. In measurement, the proposed balanced amplifier provided the output voltage difference and the maximum output voltage reduced by 20.78 dB and 2.22 dB, respectively, compared with the conventional structure. Furthermore, in this work, a simple oscilloscope-based impedance measurement method for the PA output in a balanced amplifier—comprising two sets of PAs and transformer-based quadrature couplers—is presented, using the relative magnitude and phase of output voltages for the coupler connected to both dummy and actual loads. The introduced measurement technique is compared with reflection coefficient results obtained using vector network analyzer-based methods for small-signal inputs of −20 and −10 dBm.

The amyloid- beta (Aβ) protein is a peptide that plays a central role in the development and progression of Alzheimer's disease, originating from the cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP). The peptide's structural variability is linked to different stages and manifestations of Alzheimer's pathology, making it a critical focus for understanding the disease. Current therapeutic strategies primarily involve pharmacological interventions, but they have met with limited success in altering the course of the disease. Our research introduces an innovative approach to address this challenge by employing electromagnetic waves, specifically at a frequency of 900 MHz We performed comprehensive electromagnetic simulations to explore the effects of this frequency on Aβ structures, aiming to offer an alternative non-invasive treatment avenue. Following these electromagnetic simulations, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were carried out using the Large Scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulation (LAMMPS) software to further investigate the peptide’s response at the atomic and molecular level. These simulations provided insights into the structural dynamics of Aβ under electromagnetic influence, enabling a deeper understanding of the peptide’s behavior. To substantiate the findings from our simulations and the theoretical framework, we conducted a Thioflavin T (ThT) assay and western blot analysis on in vitro Aβ fibril samples which are treated with electromagnetic (EM) wave exposure using a TEM cell device. After 3 hours of EM wave exposure, a noticeable decrease in Aβ fibrils was observed. This experimental validation was essential in confirming the simulation results and reinforcing the theoretical basis of our approach. Together, simulations and experimental evidence provide a strong foundation for exploring electromagnetic-based treatments as a potential therapeutic intervention for Alzheimer’s disease.
